Through 4 unique volunteer placements, we’ve each interacted with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School system over the past 4 months.  According to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools website,  the school system currently serves over 11,000 students within 3 high schools, 4 middle schools, 10 elementary schools, one school for children being treated at UNC hospitals, and an alternative high school program.

Volunteers provide an invaluable service in this school system.  According to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools’ volunteers & Partners website, every semester, the students in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools gain invaluable support from over 1,000 members of the community, including UNC students, parents, and senior citizens. In 1993, a volunteer office was created to provide training for those community members who choose to partner with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

Volunteer participation plays an important role in the overall success that Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools experience annually. The  Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools have the highest district-wide SAT scores in North Carolina.  In addition, high AP enrollment at the High School level combines with excellent teaching staff throughout all grade levels to promote nearly 92% of high school graduates going on to enroll in two or four year higher learning institutions.  At 87.3%, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School system ranks number 1 in the four-year cohort graduation rate.  Figures gathered from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro CIty Schools’ Who We Are: The Facts & Figures website.
